About Super Y...
The Super Y-League was formed by United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 1999 to address the need for a national youth league to further develop the upper 1% of youth soccer players throughout the United States. Instead of having talented players spread out among several local clubs and playing against each other in local leagues, the Super Y-League promotes bringing together the best possible players within each city to compete against teams of similar talent within their region in a home and away format. The USL is positioning the Super Y-League to be the most competitive youth league in the United States.
The SYL is designed specifically for the elite level player. Hence, the expanded roster sizes, no recruiting restrictions and the club pass system. The SYL is a week in - week out league. A heavy importance is focused on home and away series, for competitive reasons. The League wants to promote quality play rather than overplay. An extended league format is a better alternative for these players because it does not overload their play. The number of quality matches without overloading a player is the most important aspect to player development. Season will be played from mid June to mid August and will not interfere with club season.
Throughout the rest of the world, soccer is a year-round activity - the concept of seasonal play does not exist. Super Y-League addresses the need of the American elite female soccer athlete to compete at the highest level during the summer months.
How are substitutions different?
Please note that with the Super Y League program there are some substitution rules that are different than regular travel (WAGS for example) games. In the Super Y program a player maybe be substituted out in the first half but is not eligible to return to the game until the 2nd half. Also if substituted out in the 2nd half then that player is out for the rest of the game.
As in travel soccer games playing time is not a given, actually most Super Y teams have a large roster (as you can read below), such as 20 or 26 players but a team can only roster 18 for a game. So there might be times that a player is not rostered for a game, this is actually a good thing as the games take place over the summer and this allows families to still attend to their vacations without the team being short players.
Even if a player is rostered for a game does not guarantee playing time. The coach will have all say on the amount of playing time or rostering of all players for all games. But, with 16 games, everyone will get playing time!
How much does it cost?
Cost for the Super Y League is around $775.00 per player. This fee will cover all costs for the summer program to include uniform, games, training, transportation to out of state away games and hotels. Cost does not cover player meals. Deposit of $275.00 with the acceptance of the offer will be due within one week from the date of the offer. Checks can be made payable to Northern Virginia Soccer.

While on the opposing team, Stanford Junior, Kristy Zurmuhlen, also cites her Super Y-League experience (http://www.gostanford.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/zurmuhlen_kristy00.html).

The season consists of approximately 8 - 12 games. The majority of games are played during the summer from June to August, with the North American Finals being held every November. In 2008, the Northern Virginia U14, U15, U16, and U17 Royals and Northern Virginia U17 Majestics advanced to the North American Finals. And, in 2009 and 2010, the Jr. Mjx 95 (which started as a u13 team) WERE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS BOTH YEARS. Please note that our group of u13s will ALSO COMPETE in the Southeast Regional Leaugue - - - adding ANOTHER 8-10 games!!
What are the age brackets for the Super Y-League?
There will be teams from U13 through U17 for both boys and girls. The Super Y-League uses the same age brackets defined by birth date as the USYSA (Aug 1 to July 31). The age bracket you currently participate in with your club would be the age bracket you try-out for (Born on or after 8/1/97).
How many players will be selected for the Super Y-League team?
Depending on the quality of each tryout group 18 - 26 players will be selected. The players will compete for the 18-player roster that will be selected for each game day. We pick these numbers to fill the most competitive 18-player roster and still allow our players to take some time off during the summer months for vacations. This summer league provides a competitive training environment for all players.
What is the commitment?
Training will start at the beginning of June and continue through the first week in August. Ideally, practices will be at least twice a week but based upon age of team and league schedule will be at the discretion of the coaches.
What are the hotels like for out-of-state travel?
The club makes hotel arrangements and they vary from Marriott to Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, and Hyatt Place , etc. Chaperons are included as Team Coaches and Team Managers – rules are clear, strict, and enforced to ensure an excellent experience for all. Our group of u13s will travel/lodge with Coach Glen Waudby's u15 team as well as Coach Marie Scheweitzer's u17s. As UK Elite Reg'l Manager, Glen has run, literally, hundreds of overnight camps, and Marie has been the Super Y Director for over a decade; thus, they are both veteran chaperons with responsible teams.
What if a player has a conflict with their club team?
We are not meant to compete with the club teams, but rather be a complement to them. In the case of a conflict, the player will be encouraged to go to their respective club’s activity; however, the final decision lies with the player and parent.
Where will the team train and play home games?
Both training and home games will primarily take place in Prince William County ; however, other facilities and fields may be used as necessary.
Who will coach and train the team?
